About In Our Own Voices: For over 10 years, In Our Own Voices Inc. has provided services and support to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People of Color (LGBT POC) community of the Capital Region of Upstate New York. In that time, the organization has grown from its small, grassroots beginnings to a full-fledged organization which focuses intensely upon the advancement and success of LGBT POC. We engage in advocacy and education on a number of levels, working to ensure the voices of LGBT POC are a part of important conversations in our communities. We also advocate for legislation and policies that improve the lives of LGBT POC, as well as for enforcement of existing legislation. In Our Own Voices offers a variety of programs, including the region’s only LGBT-specific Domestic Violence Support Line, and the Capital Region Anti-Violence Project, which works to improve domestic violence services for LGBT POC in Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Montgomery, Saratoga, Columbia and Greene counties. Recently, In Our Own Voices launched a number of new programs, such as TransCare: Healthy Living for Transgender People of Color, a social support group for transgender people of color; Ask-A-Lawyer, a free legal clinic for low income LGBT in conjunction with area legal resources, and Crystal Free, an anti-crystal meth campaign aimed at stemming the use of this dangerous drug within the LGBT community. |
